What do I need to teach online?

Most people do not know what’s needed to begin their online teaching career, so what exactly do I need to teach online?

How I began

Being a PA for over 16 years I was retrenched. I then started working for a factory which manufactured tape products, running the wages, debtors and creditors, stock control, product wastage, site management and so forth, 6 months down the line the company was forced to shut down for reasons I cannot disclose and 80 employees lost their jobs. We all know jobs are difficult to come by especially jobs which pay well. So whilst job hunting one of my friends told me about teaching online. I decided to look into it and find out “What do I need to teach online from home”? and get qualified as quickly as possible. What I really liked about this idea is that it would give me the opportunity to work from home and be with my kids.

Whatever it may be, teaching English online is making this possible for thousands of people around the world – and it’s here to stay! But before you embrace a pants-less work environment, make sure you have the basic qualifications to teach English online covered!

I fully believe that good money can be made online whatever your niche and teaching online from home has been my first steps into achieving these goals. I have been a teacher working from home since June 2016 with iTutor Group and a few other companies.

I am a Senior Consultant (SC) with over 1000 hours of teaching. I teach students from the age of 5 up to adult, some being pensioners 65+ years old, LVP sessions (level placement level 1-12) as well as recruiting and interviewing new potential teachers.

A Senior consultant (SC) is someone who has:

  1. Successfully taught more than 1,000 session hours to-date with a commendable performance
  2. Those maintaining a 9.5 average rating (Please note the average rating mentioned here includes ALL ratings a consultant has received) in the most recent 200 session hours taught
  3. With less than a 3% low ratings ratio in the most recent 200 session hours taught
  4. In possession of a TESOL certificate or its equivalent

TESOL/TEFL Certification (or its equivalent) required

Enthusiastic and professional

Great communication and presentation skills

Ability to motivate students

Computer literate

Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field

Minimum of 1 year teaching experience

TEFOL/TESOL Certification

Being a native or fluent English speaker is a key part of teaching English online, but that alone does not qualify just anyone to take charge of a student’s future with the English language. Online language schools typically require their English teachers to hold a legitimate (accredited) TEFOL Certification so that they know what training and skills a prospective English teacher possess.

There are many online courses available for you to obtain your TEFOL certification in Global Language Training. Subject to availability you can get a major discount on Hyperli make sure to read the fine print as some require you to complete the course within 3-6 months should you need a time extension this is available at an extra cost if needed.

Bachelor Degree

While this is not always a mandatory requirement, alothough most of China has now implimented the neccessaty of a Bachelor Degree you will find that the majority of the reputable teach English online employers require that all their teachers hold a BA. Even if your degree is unrelated to education your degree can be in any field or subject – Marketing, Arts, Computer Science, Civil Law etc.

Internet Speed

You will need a fast Internet connection to teach English online. Most online employers require a wired connection (instead of WiFi) as this is more stable. The majority of companies have a required upload and download speed. Make sure to check their speed requirements before applying.

Your upload speed is their main concern, you don’t want to lose connection during a session, should you not reconnect to the session within a certain about of time this will result in you being switched and not paid for the session and a possible penalty. Make sure that you have a good enough upload speed when choosing your internet service provider. I would advise that your upload be a minimum of 4 mpbs. You can check your internet speed here.

Teaching Benefits

* Flexible Schedule Set your own schedule and hours, so you can spend your free time on things that matter.

* Work From Home Meet great people from different cultures and career backgrounds, get inspired in adult classes; Have fun and make friends with talented children and teenagers in Jr classes.

* Rates This depends on what the company is offering. Your payment will include a base rate and a performance bonus. The performance bonus will be based on student ratings, which can reflect your teaching skills directly on your payment.

  • Junior (Ages 5~18)
  • Preschool or kindergarten students
  • Elementary students
  • Teenagers
  • Adult (Ages 18+)
  • University students
  • Working professionals or managers
  • Parents or retired workers

Teaching Materials

Most companies provide the teaching material which you can view within an hour of the class starting and it will be your responsibility to go through the material and prepare your props and so forth for the lesson. If you are a freelance teacher there are many resources online where you can download, print or purchase lesson plans. You can find ESL teaching material here.

For props, you could use items around the house, your kid’s toys or even make your own if you’re a crafty type of person. Search on Google and you will find unlimited resources you can download, print and use.

A great tool I highly recommend is Manycam. All you need is a green screen or a plain piece of material behind you. Manycam is FREE to download and there are 1000s of props, you can search for and download as much as you like, you can even create your own if you cannot find what you are looking for.

You can change your background by making use of the Chroma key although the Chroma key setting is only available on the paid version. I use the FREE version and it works just fine for me.

It allows you to have fun and be creative in your sessions, both my JR and Adult students love it when I use Manycam it allows them to feel more relaxed, helps shy students engage and participate more as well as bringing humor to the class. While using Manycam you are also having fun in the session which brings out your enthusiasm, keeps your students happy and also helps improve your ratings thus increasing your bonuses which means better pay. It’s a win-win everyone is happy.

  1. Dear Kay,

Thanks a lot for the helpful and informative post. I must say I found your post highly uplifting & educational.

As we all know, there are 1000’s of scams online and people are struggling to find genuine ways to make money online. You have provided a great solution via your post. Sharing your experience adds more value to this post.

iTutorGroup sounds interesting and the best thing is, I believe we need not to pay any money. Benefits of Teaching Online are many. Working from the comfort of our home and being our own boss is a blessing.

I can tell you I have taken some great insights from this post. You left no stone up-turned in explaining how it all works, including the requirements. Thanks for the great inspiring post! This has to be motivating, not only for me but also for many others who look for ways to make money online.

    Much Success!

  2. Your article on teaching online inspired me. Honestly, I do want to teach English online for people who really need the basics of being a good English speaker and writer.

You pointed out that teaching English must be preceded by the required qualification for getting the job nailed. Would be delighted if you could suggest some fundamental points on this. Minimum scores for a candidate to become eligible.

On the question of TESOL/TEFL, what is the best for Indian denizens?

Looking forward to reading more of your updates.

    All the best.

    • Most companies prefer a BA in any field although there are companies which will accept candidates just with a TEFOL or TESOL this course is offered to anyone who speaks English including non-native English Speakers. You need to have a decent understanding of the English Language as you teach grammar concepts and so forth. As long as your accent is not too strong, you speak slowly and clearly, there shouldn’t be a problem. Itutor has many Indian and other non-native Teachers and they will inform you whether your accent is not suitable. Previous teaching skills are an advantage maybe you have previously taught Sunday school classes or cooking classes, for example, those would be good to add to your CV.

  3. Hallo there,

I am very glad to have found your post. I have been looking for this kind of information for so long but with little success.

See, my mother has been a teacher for more than a decade now and she has been telling me that she would want to make an income online teaching people.

She had heard that it’s possible to earn good money online teaching.

I promised her I would look for something for her and the requirements needed to get her started. I am glad of how thorough you’ve been with everything.

I’ll get her to read this post and I am sure she is going to love it.

Thanks heaps for being this thorough. I appreciate.

  4. I too have recently become unemployed and several people I know have been teaching English online and love it

They get to choose the hours they work and the money seems pretty decent from what I have heard

My first language is English but I have never taught before and would really like to be able to help others learn a 2nd language so is there a course I could go onto become an online tutor?

I know you said I would need a bachelor degree but is there anything else I could do?

    • Hi Matthew

A BA is required is any field,  their companies that will take you without a BA but the main course you would need to complete is the TEFOL/TESOL course (Teach English Foreign Language and or Teach English Second Language) as this is the qualification needed in order to teach English to Foreign students or Second Language you can do this online through the links provided above there are many companies offering it as well as giving you the opportunity to travel to a Foreign Country and teach. There are many schools in China, Spain and more which will pay your flight, accommodation etc in order for you to teach at one of their local schools.  You complete the course in your own time it is a very detailed course some are 10 – 12 modules and you learn how to teach the correct way.  Itutor has a great training platform and many live training sessions for teachers to attend. You will attend a training session before you teach a live class. I have found the training to be well informative and definitely worth the time to attend.

  5. I like this post because it reminded me of my failure and I am glad that many people can find this post and avoid to repeat my mistake.

My mistake was to take on an online teaching position without the right tools. I had simple earphones set, you know the normal one we use on our phones. And I told myself that it will work just fine and that I may buy a better one with my earnings. But my classes were not going well, a student couldn’t hear clearly and the results were, me getting a bad rating.

I received fewer clients, so I had to buy the right equipment and thankfully I got a way better rating. Rating is everything in the online business.

So, my advise is to get the right tools from the start.

  6. Wow, I’ve never seen the post like this detailed about earning extra cash for teaching online.

I saw websites you recommend and it’s quite good.

I want to start my online teaching career now but I think I need some materials to start my online job.

Well, in my opinion, the microphone is the most important pre-requisite to start it.

Thank you for summarizing a variety of the features of the microphones.

It helped me a lot to pick one from the products comparing each other.

Thanks for the good content and I will let you know if I start my online teaching career!

    • Thank you, It is my pleasure Grey, I agree headset is most important, I have been through a few one my puppy chewed up right before my class. 🙁 it is best to invest in a good headset it saves you money in the long run. I learnt that the hard way. Looking forward to hearing from you. Chat soon.

  7. I have been thinking about teaching English online for a while now but I know nothing about the process… Thank you for letting me know!

    I have one question though…

I am not a native English speaker. Could I be able to teach online? I have proficiency and certification that I am able to teach English. Is that enough?

    • Hi Harry, yes there many non-native teachers as long as you have proficiency and certification you are welcome to Teach English Online or any other subject which you have knowledge of.
